Sam Little started driving truck in 1969 in northern California. He did work in sawmills and logging in between playing music in small bands, both country and gospel, all over the western states. In 1974, while he was working for Louisiana Pacific—who bought Kenai Lumber Co in Alaska—Sam was hired to haul some machinery up to Seward from Washington State. He met one of the bosses for Kaps Transport when he became stuck in a blizzard close to Whitehorse, Yukon. There were several trucks in the ditch, some even rolled over and during the wait, Ron Anderson offered Sam a job with Kaps. After the journey to Seward was finished, Sam went to work for Kaps in Fairbanks hauling the 80 foot pipe, and all kinds of other freight, to Prudhoe Bay. He worked for Kaps 5 years and then bought his own truck and hauled a little grain in Montana before moving his grain truck to Delta Junction, Alaska, where he hauled barley and started hauling groceries, cement, lumber and anything else he could haul. Sam Little Trucking was born, with this start, and stayed in business until 1994. This trucking company spread to hauling groceries for several stores as well as transporting By Pass mail to Barrow, Fort Wainwright, Point Lay, Nuiqsut and Cordova. This was a good 10 years working for Alaska Commercial, Frontier Foods and also Castle Warehouses. Sam also laid the ground work for the three Bears Stores of Alaska with Larry Weisz and Norman Peterson.
Since 1996 Sam has worked for Vic Hoskins Trucking hauling produce for the Fred Meyer Stores in Alaska, and out of this started Little Country in 2003, from Tok, Alaska.
As well he has hauled some household and military goods in between.
Sam is a former member of the Alaska Army National Guard and a retired 959 teamster.
He has done a lot of music for the history channel and PBS as well as CBS. There is a lot of working people songs in his life, that he has written, such as “Kamikaze Trail”, “Girl in Alaska”, “Total Forces” and “Truckers Shutdown”. In 1979 “Truckers Shutdown” helped bring down the cost of fuel in America and was responsible for ratification of surcharge signed by the US senate, which has brought millions of dollars to the transportation industry.
